Sewing Machine Service & Maintenance in Arlington, MA

Keep your home sewing machine running smoothly with routine cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

If your machine is skipping stitches, jamming, sounding rough, or simply hasn’t been serviced in a long time, a professional maintenance service will make it run like new again. Most appointments are focused on preventative care: troubleshooting, cleaning, and lubricating. When needed, adjustments and repairs are addressed as part of the service plan.

What’s included in a service

Sewing machine servicing is usually less about “big repairs” and more about restoring smooth, reliable operation. The work typically falls into two categories:

  • Troubleshooting, cleaning, and lubricating (most of the service)

  • Adjustments and repairs when needed

My process (so you know what to expect)

Step 1: Initial inspection
Before any work begins, the machine is inspected and its condition is documented. This includes checking for missing or broken parts and reviewing the condition of knobs, levers, dials, and spool pins. When applicable, wiring and computerized functions are also checked.

Step 2: Deep cleaning
Lint and compacted debris are removed, including from areas that are easy to miss in normal at-home cleaning. Hidden areas are addressed carefully, including around computerized components when applicable. Old lubricant  (oil & grease) is also removed as part of the cleaning process.

Step 3: Controlled troubleshooting
Test sewing is done in a controlled setup using a new needle, quilting cotton, and high-quality thread. This helps identify what’s truly going on and separates common setup issues from machine issues. It also helps narrow down the likely causes quickly and accurately.

Step 4: Lubrication and finishing checks
Gears and moving parts are lubricated using machine-appropriate methods. Because different brands require different approaches, lubrication is handled carefully and specifically. Final checks include test sewing after cleaning, verifying straight and specialty stitches, and confirming proper timing, thread tension and feeding.

Why regular maintenance is worth it

Lint buildup is one of the most common culprits behind performance issues over time. In some machines, lint accumulation can even affect computerized components. Regular cleaning and preventative maintenance help avoid bigger repairs and keep your machine sewing smoothly.

1. What does “service” usually mean? Most service appointments focus on troubleshooting, cleaning, and lubricating. If adjustments or repairs are needed, they’re identified during troubleshooting and addressed as part of the service plan.

2. My machine is skipping stitches or jamming. Is that serious? Often it isn’t. Many issues are caused by buildup, old lubricant, or setup variables. Controlled test sewing and troubleshooting help determine whether it’s a maintenance issue or something that needs adjustment.

3. Why do you test sew with specific materials? Using a consistent setup (new needle, quilting cotton, and high-quality thread) helps separate user/setup factors from true machine behavior and makes diagnosis more reliable.

4. Can I clean my machine with canned air? It’s not recommended. Canned air can push lint deeper into the machine, which can create bigger problems over time.

5. What if my machine brand isn’t listed? Send your brand and model and I’ll let you know if it’s covered.
