Winchester Fiber Arts

Sewing, quilting, knitting & crochet lessons + sewing machine service & maintenance in Winchester, MA and nearby towns.

I offer personalized sewing, knitting, and crochet lessons, plus sewing machine service and maintenance, for anyone from age 7 to 99. Whether you’re a true beginner, picking things back up after years, or stuck mid-project, I’ll help you move forward with calm, supportive coaching.

Some people want a structured “start from zero” plan. Others prefer to jump into a project and learn as they go. Either way works. I’ll meet you where you are, tailor the lesson to your goals, and make sure you leave with real progress and a clear next step.

What can I help you with?

A teaching style that helps you actually learn

Confident Learning

You’ll leave each lesson with pride and excitement, either with something finished, a strong start, or a clear turning point where things finally make sense. The focus stays on practical steps that move your project forward, not perfection. You’ll know exactly what to do next, and you’ll feel confident between sessions because you’ll understand why you’re doing each step.

Real Progress

Learning fiber arts is hands-on, and that means mistakes happen. That’s not a problem—it’s part of the process. In lessons, I’ll show you how to spot issues early, how to fix them without panic, and how to keep moving forward so you don’t lose momentum.

We’ll work at a pace that feels comfortable. Some students like to watch first, others learn best by jumping right in. Either way, you’ll get clear guidance, practical tips, and the confidence and motivation to work on your own between sessions.

Flexible Fit

Lessons are personalized and low-pressure. We can move quickly when you’re excited and slow down when something feels confusing. If you have a busy schedule, we’ll make it work—shorter sessions, longer sessions, or occasional “project rescue” help when you need it. The point is to fit learning into real life, in a way that feels doable and enjoyable.

Who we teach

Who we teach

  • True beginners

  • Returning after years (it often comes back quickly, and I’ll introduce you to modern tools/techniques)

  • “I’m stuck on a project” (machine confusion, pattern confusion, next steps)

  • Kids (~7+, usually best at 8+) + parents always welcome to stay

  • Teens (alterations + confidence + fearlessness)

  • Adults (creative outlet + stress relief + skill-building)

  • Gift lessons (customizable)

How lessons work

1

Tell me your goal

I’ll ask what you want to make and what your goals are. If you’re not sure, I’ll suggest simple projects (often straight-stitch confidence builders).

2

Get a "first win"

Beginners usually start with fundamentals: sewing a straight line + machine basics, or slipknot/chain/foundation row, or cast on + knit stitch.

3

Leave with progress + a plan

If you’re stuck, bring your machine and project (or I can come to you) and we’ll get you unstuck with clear next steps.

Meet Sarah

I’ve loved sewing, knitting, crochet, and crafting my whole life—starting around age eight making clothes for stuffed animals, and later using patterns for my own clothes, prom dresses, and Halloween costumes. I’ve made many quilts using techniques like hand appliqué, English paper piecing, and foundation paper piecing. I also love designing a unique holiday card every winter for friends and family. More recently I’ve enjoyed learning what the Cricut Maker 3 can do, and I also dabble in jewelry making, weaving, and even metal work. (Sarah Milt)

Matthew W.

Sarah was my daughter’s sewing instructor, and during that time she made great leaps in her ability and understanding of sewing. It was really impressive to see what she worked on week to week, and it helped build a love of sewing that continues to this day.
